The festivities that animate the city of Angra do Heroísmo, classified as a UNESCO heritage site, are a good illustration of the main handicraft productions of the island

Port of call of the ships that made the race for the Indies during the period of the Discoveries, Angra do Heroísmo was, since the 16th century, the gateway to luxury products consumed by wealthy classes. The riches of the East allowed a local elite to flourish and, with it, became a marketing center for the main artisan productions of Terceira Island, whether some of popular origin, which at that time were the result of very active activities, financially and relevant as is the case of weaving and ceramics, whether they are aristocratic, beneficiaries of the new commercialized products.

Brazilian sugar is molded according to an oriental recipe (alfenid), which dates back to the 15th century and was transformed into a popular Christian ritual today associated with the festivities of Espírito Santo in which small anthropomorphic figures and Sugar-molded zoomorphs are offered as religious promises; spices such as cinnamon, cloves and a wide variety of peppercorns transformed the local gastronomy, giving rise to one of the most emblematic dishes on the island, the rump, and diversifying the range of sweets of the predominant convent, worthy of a queen, such as Doña Amélia’s cakes offered to her when the kings of Portugal landed in the bay of Angra do Heroísmo on July 4, 1901.

The festivals that animate the city of Angra do Heroísmo, classified as heritage by UNESCO, well illustrate the main artisan productions of the island,
regardless of their more popular or scholarly origin: in the Sanjoaninas the balconies display colored loom bedspreads or “crazy work”; the altars of the Holy Spirit are the stage for white towels and sumptuous embroidered flags, and the function tables are full of kneaded dough and clay bowls that smoke the aroma of the rump; bullfights, in turn, inspire the production of wooden replicas to delight children that will continue generations of fans.
