When the ‘12-string viola’ arrived in the Azores in the 15th century, it took on common characteristics on all the islands, maintaining its primitive features, but gradually acquiring different tunings and particularities.
As a result, it became the most typical musical instrument of the Azores archipelago, playing an important role over the years in festive songs, balhos, derriços, desgarradas, desafios and despiques and, for this reason, acquiring great social and cultural importance in the lives of the Azoreans.
