Rehabilitation and maintenance of buildings – the case of Angra do Heroísmo

In recent years, the Angra do Heroísmo Municipality has carried out a series of rehabilitation works on buildings – particularly churches – that were almost completely destroyed by the great earthquake of 1980. The municipality went ahead with the restoration work, reusing elements such as tiles, statues and woodwork that had been removed from the wreckage of the churches and preserved in storage. The restoration work endeavoured to use traditional techniques and materials to maintain the heritage.

Examples include the Church of Santo António dos Capuchos, the Church of São João Baptista and the Church of the Concepcionistas.
